Okay.
So I mentioned on my purely OOC account (I am starting to get back into RPing and used to be a fairly decent Nightwing if I do say so myself) on Twitter that for my birthday NEXT year I was planning to spend 10 days in Cardiff on a Doctor Who extravaganza and another 4 in London going to Baker Street and the likes for so purely Sherlockian fun. I’ve been to London before and I loved the Natural History Museum and the pubs and Buckingham Palace. The architecture is beautiful and I am in love with the UK.
A friend of mine who I recently made amends with @’s me saying that that is a stupid reason to come to the UK and she hates that “Her city is being treated this way” by Sherlockians and Whovians.
Is it wrong to say that I felt personally offended by that?
I just felt that that was like telling a Potterhead it wasn’t cool to go to Potter-world in Florida or doing the Potter-tours of the filming locations in London. Or telling a Ringer (fan of Lord of the Rings) that it was offensive to the people of New Zealand that they were only touring “their” country because LotR was filmed there. Even TWIHARDS flood Forks in the states! Just because I want to go to England and Wales for fiction television shows and novels doesn’t mean I’m disrespecting the beauty of those countries. I was in Switzerland last year and was too mystified in Lucerne and Zurich to even THINK about Reichenbach Falls.
Bah.
I just feel really annoyed by that comment and the fact that this person compared Sherlock fans in North America that want to go to London to that of the weeaboos who want to go to Japan and become Mangakas.
I want to see 221B Baker St. I don’t want to become a fucking consulting detective. I don’t want to be a war doctor veteran. I don’t want to join Scotland Yard or be part of the government division that seems to know everything.
I was in Austria and was excited to see Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart’s house. Does that mean I was insulting the people of Salzburg because I wasn’t as excited to see the rest of the city as I was to see the museum of Mozart’s work?
Of all the things that have been bothering me lately, this one just hit a nerve and really hurt.
